In many cases, substance use begins with experimental or social use. For some individuals, this use can gradually become more frequent. Over time, a person may require increasing amounts of a substance to achieve the same effect, eventually leading to a dependence and the need to use simply to feel normal.
Common signs and behaviors associated with substance use concerns may include:
- Regular or frequent use of a substance (daily or multiple times per day)
- Strong cravings or urges to use
- Developing tolerance, requiring more of the substance to achieve the same effect
- Ensuring a consistent supply of the substance
- Difficulty meeting personal, academic, or professional responsibilities
- Engaging in behaviors that are out of character to obtain the substance
- Spending significant time and energy obtaining or using the substance
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using
- Repeated, unsuccessful attempts to reduce or stop use
If you identify with any of these signs or behaviors, it may be beneficial to consider addiction counseling.
